macbeth and The Fisherman's Wife
Macbeth is driven by his wife to aspire for more like how the fisherman’s wife sent him back for wishes. In the Fisherman and his Wife the fisherman catches an enchanted fish and tosses it back into the ocean. When he returns home his wife asks if he caught anything, he tells he caught an enchanted fish but let it go. The wife send him back to wish for a cottage. In act 1 scene 5, Lady Macbeth talks to Macbeth about killing the king after reading his letter of how the witches foretold that he would king. Both wives were greedy and were unhappy with what had, needing more.
The fisherman’s wife was very greedy, after getting the cottage she asked to have a castle, then to be king. This went on until she asked to be able to move the sun and moon. The fisherman did not agree with his wife as he was content with what they had. At the end of the story they end up back in their hovel. Lady Macbeth would talk macbeth out quitting, questioning if he was a man. She couldn’t kill the King because he looked like her father. Near the end of the play Lady Macbeth took her life as she couldn’t the deed her and her husband had done.
The fisherman represents Macbeth, both we content with what they had, but their wives pushed them to go further even if it wasn’t for the best. The wife represents Lady Macbeth, both of these characters were greedy for power and made their husbands do the dirty work. The fish represents the 3 witches, these are a supernatural aspect of each story, also the cause of the events that lead each story. Both stories start the same, the main character happened upon a supernatural being and told their wives. In both cases the wives became greedy and wanted more power. Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth to kill King Duncan after becoming thane of Cawdor; the fisherman’s wife tells him to go back and request to become a king and then an emperor. At the end of both story/play the couples are no longer in positions of power, either dead or back to their old life.
