My favourite moment in the The Alchemist, is when the King of Salem explains to Santiago about how expectations can mean more to people than their Personal Legends. "In the long run, what people think about shepherds and bakers becomes more important for them than their own Personal Legends." - pg. 24. Most would rather have the praise of others for what they do, than to do what satisfies themselves. We always have a responsibility for ourselves and our actions, but we cannot control what other people do. In the case of a child, then yes we are responsible for them; a person who can make decisions and understand that there are consequences can no longer let someone else take the blame. You can only control what you do and face those actions.
